what is diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic condition that happens when your pancreas can't make insulin anymore or when your body can't use insulin properly.

Insulin is a hormone made by the pancreas. It helps glucose (sugar from the food you eat) move from your blood into your body's cells to make energy. Your body turns all kinds of carb foods into glucose, and insulin is what helps glucose get into your cells.

When your body can't make or use insulin well, it leads to high blood sugar levels, known as hyperglycemia. If high sugar levels stick around for a long time, they can harm your body and cause problems with different organs and tissues.
